Maria Gomes

Fernao Pires (also known as Maria Gomes) is an aromatic white grape variety grown extensively throughout Portugal. The versatile grape is mostly made into dry white wines but can also act as a base for sparkling wines and sweet dessert wines. Zest of lemon, lime and orange are common aroma descriptors for Fernao Pires wines, sometimes with a hint of spice. Other examples can show more honey and mineral flavors, especially as they age.

The variety is best suited to the hot climates of central and southern Portugal, particularly in Ribatejo, Lisboa and in Bairrada, where it goes by the name of Maria Gomes. Fernao Pires can provide generous yields and often needs to be controlled to prevent over cropping. The vine is susceptible to frost and is not suitable in cooler areas.
