Grape Moscatel

Moscatel is the name given to the Muscat grape in Spain and Portugal and is the world’s oldest known variety of grape. Ironically it is one of the only varieties that produce wines that taste of grapes. Highly aromatic, Muscat can produce a range of wines from pale, bone-dry whites, through to golden-yellow, rich, sweet wines, and low-alcohol sparklers.

  • Planalto is one of the biggest references of white wine in the Douro Demarcated Region, fruit of the in-depth studies carried out over the years, the careful choice of the grape varieties that compose it and the use of the best winemaking technology in its production. This white blend comes from high-altitude vineyards above the river Douro. The soil in the Douro Valley is schistous; a slate-like metamorphic rock that fractures vertically - allowing vine roots to dig deep to access water and nutrients to sustain them through the hot Douro summers. The poor quality of the soil forces the grapes to produce low yields of grapes with a great concentration of flavour. The grapes were harvested by hand and were selected for their balance between flavour intensity and freshness. Ideal to accompany fish, seafood and white meat dishes.
  • Uivo, a howl back to Nature! Naturally farmed Moscatel Galego, Branco Wine grapes with minimal intervention in the cellar, 4 months of skin contact in cement tanks. Folias de Baco was started in 2007 by young, innovative winemaker, Tiago Sampaio, who was inspired by his grandfather’s vineyard work. He has a vivacious curiosity and loves to experiment at every step of the winemaking/growing processes. He has studied agricultural engineering and has a PhD in Viticulture and Enology from Oregon State University, where he picked up on modern philosophies and aesthetics of winemaking, never forgetting his Douro roots. Folias de Baco is in the Alto Douro, in the sub-region of Cima-Corgo where the land is very tough and challenging at a higher altitude, but it is an expression of traditional melding with modern techniques. The ‘Uivo Curtido’ is comprised of 100% moscatel galego from 35+ year old vines in soils spattered with schist and granite. It is unfined and unfiltered. As tasty as it looks. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan. Have fun with it
