Zinfandel (also known as Primitivo in Italy) is a black-skinned wine grape that produces quite a dark, powerful wine, but slightly lighter in colour than Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Its high alcohol content, medium tannin and generous acidity give it a full-bodied taste and feel, and it’s generally considered a slightly sweeter red wine. Typically thought of as a uniquely Californian or Italian grape variety, its origin is actually Croatian and the name “Zinfandel” is thought to be Austrian.
