• In 1988, A Danish-American couple, Hans and Carrie Jorgensen set out in a sailboat to find a place to start a family and plant vines. They came to Alentejo and they found “Cortes de Cima.” It was just a barren land and a few abandoned buildings. But Carrie, of Portuguese ancestry, said the landscape reminded her of California, her homeland. Hans, who was born in Denmark, fell in love with the Mediterranean sun. Their first wine was "born" in 1998 and the many successful vintages which followed as well as their pioneering spirit have put Cortes de Cima on the map.  The main grape used is Aragonez (Spanish call it Tempranillo). It has a overt nose of fresh cherries, red plum, dark fruits and a lick of black liquorice. It is vibrant and well-rounded on the palate with good acidity and body. There is so much to love about this wine. One of my favourites enjoy!!
  • This blend of Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Tinta Roriz, and Alicante Bouschet lives up to its name. With an intense rubi colour, this wine presents itself with a great concentration in the nose. Extremely rich aroma with predominance of red ripe fruits and some floral notes, well integrated with notes of spices coming from the ageing in French and American oak barrels. In the mouth it shows great complexity with notes of plums and blackberries. The finish is rich and elegant. Excellent wine for hearty spiced meals with red grilled or roast meat, lamb and game dishes. Enjoy!
  • The Castro Ventosa estate was founded by the Perez family in 1752 and has been in the family ever since. They own 75 hectares of Mencía vines in Bierzo, making them the biggest owners of this varietal within the D.O Bierzo. For this wine, younger vines are used from 17 parcels across the Valtuille de Abajo village zone. Vines range from 20-40 years and viticulture is conventional, everything is done by hand and vines are not irrigated. Pair it with hard cheese, pasta, red meat, roasted vegetables.
  • This is the first wine made by Esporão back in 1985. Label illustrated by António Poppe that changes with every organic vintage. Classic wine style made from estate grown grapes that shows the consistency and the rich, ripe fruit characters which are typical of the best Alentejo red wines. Deep dark red colour with intense spicy aroma of mature red berry fruits with discrete oak complexity. On the palate it is elegant, dense and creamy.
  • Casa Relvas is a family-owned winery that was born out of a desire to give continuity to the family history associated with the land for five generations. The project began in 1997, Alexandre Relvas, who learned about his extensive family roots in the estate "Herdade De Sao Miguel" in Alentejo. In 2001, the first 10 hectares of vineyards were planted.  Next year, Nuno Franco, a consultant in viticulture and enology, joins the project, he continues to plant another 25 hectares of vineyards. In 2003, a new winery was built on the estate with the possibility of vinification of 500 tons of grapes. It was headed by winemaker Fernanda Gomes. The following year, the first wine of the farm was launched on the market. By 2010, wine sales doubled to 1 million bottles. The following year, the company acquired the estate "Herdade da Pimenta" with 65 hectares of vineyards and a winery that can process 2.5 tons of grapes. Since 2016, the company also began to grow olive trees. The mission of Casa Relvas is to produce quality wines that accompany every moment of life, wines that can bring special pleasure from food, celebration, meeting with friends and beautify the memories of bright moments of life. This wine accompanies red meats, roast beef and grilled meats.
  • Moving freely through the cork oak forests of the Alentejo, where it feeds on acorns among other things, the Alentejo pig, a species indigenous to Portugal, is Europe's only surviving pastoral pig. Due to the way in which it forms part of the landscape and preserves the region's Mediterranean forest, it is part of Alentejo's heritage. Named after this reputable pig, this wine combines two of Alentejo's biggest symbols. All the grapes used in this wine were produced in accordance with the Sustainable Agriculture Integrated Production guidelines as defined by the International Organisation for Biological and Integrated Control (OILB/IOBC): www.iobc-wprs.org. The rigorous compliance with these practices is certified by an independent organisation, recognized by the Portuguese State. With its smooth tannins and enormous balance, this wine pairs wonderfully with light dishes, such as poultry and pasta, as well as with sausages, ham and more sophisticated meat dishes.
  • Quinta do Vale Meao Meandro Tinto is a Douro red wine made by one of the most famous wine estates of the Douro, if not the world. The estate was Bought and established by that legendary lady of Port, Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, in the early 19th Century, it has been the stage for many pioneering feats of winemaking and viticulture in the Douro. Currently Quinta do Vale Meao is still in family hands, with descendant Francisco Xavier Olazabal (Vito), his winemaker son Francisco (Xito) and daughter Luísa all devoted to the cause. This humorous and relaxed team has, since they started making wine at the quinta in 1999, pushed the boundaries of excellence in Douro reds beyond what was imaginable. The vineyards are perched on the Douro River’s most dramatic meander (hence “Meandro”) and consist of some 70 hectares of vines planted on schist, granite and alluvial soils. The vines planted are the usual suspects for the Douro, Touriga Naçional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Barroca, Tinto Câo however they are block planted which ultimately allows more control over the blend (it is common practice in the Douro for the different grape varieties to be planted mixed up). The vineyards are adjacent to a fantastic granite mansion and winery. Quinta do Vale Meao Meandro is the “second” wine but shares a lot of the characteristics of its big brother, the Quinta do Vale Meao, but manages to reveal a character of its own. It is not an ordinary second wine by any means. Quinta do Vale Meao Meandro Tinto 2015 is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca, 16% Tinta Roriz, 5% Tinta Barroca, 2% Alicante Bouschet and 2% Tinta Amarela. The grapes are harvested by hand, cooled down and then trodden in granite lagares, then transferred to stainless steel for vinification, by individual variety, before ageing in 2nd and 3rd year 225L French Allier oak barriques. It is a fruity and spicy wine with real Douro character.
  • It is in the heart of the genuine Alentejo, with its unique aromas, flavors and textures, nature, silence and immensity, that the 80 hectares of vineyards at Herdade Monte da Cal, located in the municipality of Fronteira, in the parish of São Saturnino, extend over 80 hectares of vineyards. about 40 km from Portalegre. Surrounded by the tranquility of the northern Alentejo plain, it is part of the calm environment of nature characteristic of this part of the country, surrounded by an infinity of vineyards, which we can only see, far away. Here, the red varieties Trincadeira, Syrah, Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet, Alfrocheiro and Touriga Nacional are planted. The architecture and decoration of the estate reflect the Arab influences, so present in the Alentejo culture. The estate’s modern winery is a fundamental pillar to reinforce the visibility of the wines of this house, and a wine tourism project is already planned for this property. Suggested pairing with dishes from the Mediterranean, Chinese, Indian and African cuisine.
  • Herdade do Mouchao is a historic winery in Portugal’s Alentejo region that specialises in producing excellent red wines from the local Alicante Bouschet grape. The estate’s roots date back to the 19th century when Thomas Reynolds first moved from Porto to Alentejo to enter the prosperous cork-making industry. Later his grandson, John Reynolds saw an opportunity to start making both wine and corks and purchased the 900 hectare Herdade do Mouchao estate. Vineyards were planted, in 1901 he built a high-ceilinged adobe winery (or “adega”) and a distillery was added to the winery in 1929, where until today Mouchão's pommace brandy is produced. Unfortunately the estate was seized in 1974 by order of the powerful military government ruling the country at the time. The Reynolds were only able to regain the estate in 1985 and today the family works around 38 hectares of vines. Today, the Herdade do Mouchão continues to be run by the descendants of the original family whose cellar and vineyard workers have been with them for generations. The process is, as it always has been, unhurried (There is alway Manana). The grape varieties are local, picked by hand and foot-trodden. In the ever-changing world of winemaking, Herdade do Mouchão, remains a traditional, family-run winery.
  • This fortified wine has been produced in Mouchão since the winery was built in 1901. The best grapes from Alicante Bouschet were harvested by hand and trodden by foot in traditional stone presses. The grapes are gently macerated until the fermentation process begins in order to develop a round, subtle and soft mouthfeel.  After 120 years, this fortified dessert wine continues to be essential in the homes of Alentejo families at Christmas time. Sold and consumed young, mainly at the beginning of December of the same year of production. Nowadays its popularity is growing outside the festive season and is served in restaurants, very cold after meals. A very traditional and forming part of the tradition of the Northeast Alentejo.
