Côte Roannaise is one of the lesser-known appellations of the Loire Valley, situated on the eastern foothills of the Massif Central near Roanne in central France. Historically, this area once had vast vineyards — up to ~20 000 ha in the 19th century — but shrank dramatically due to phylloxera, economic shifts toward industrial farming, wars and frost in the 20th century.
