This wine comes from a sleepy town(not sure after a few glasses) of Bönnigheim, just north of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg, is not the first place you’d think of for great wines. And yet Christian Dautel is elevating this area. From four very different soil types he makes pure, precise wines that burst with energy and elegance. The estate’s story is similar to many in the region: his father left the local cooperative in 1975, and bottled his own wine from just 3 hectares. The estate grew, and when Christian took over in 2013 (after stints in Australia, South Africa, Oregon and at Comte Lafon in Burgundy), he expanded still further to the current size of 17 hectares. As well as the ‘traditional’ varieties of Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Lemberger, he is focussing increasingly on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
