Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm was founded in 1911 by Johann Josef Prüm, but the Prüm family has been cultivating vines along the banks of the Mosel since the 17th Century. Today, Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm is owned and managed by Dr. Manfred Prüm and his daughter Dr. Katharina Prüm. They focus solely on Riesling from famous sites like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Zeltinger Sonnenuhr and further upstream at Bernkasteler Badstube.
Located in the Middle Mosel Valley, one of the most northern wine-growing regions in the world, the estate of J.J. Prüm totals 22 hectares. Such cool climate conditions allows for late-harvesting, which enables the grapes to develop their fruity, floral and herbal aromas. Slate soils provide great minerality and the estate’s use of wild yeast and late bottling allows for a full expression of the mostly ungrafted, old vines of the vineyard.
The wines of J J Prüm are considered to be the very finest expression of Mosel wines offering poise, finesse, elegance, purity and vivacity. They have legendary potential for ageing.
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s Wehlener Sonnenuhr is a fabulously sited and steeply sloping vineyard that lays opposite the family home, across the river. It is the jewel in the Prüm holdings and one of the grandes dames of the Mosel. The name refers to a sundial constructed by Jodicus Prüm in the vineyard. There are five hectares of old, low-yielding, ungrafted vines here and the wines produced from here are defined by their warmth and incredible quality.
